Microsoft Gets Aggressive with Windows 10

| June 12, 2016

Windows 10 Upgrade PromptIf you haven’t upgraded to Windows 10 yet, you’re probably still seeing the reminder to do so. The free upgrade offer from Microsoft is only valid until July 29th. This Microsoft reminder is misleading, though.

If you click the X in the top right corner to close the window, this will actually accept the upgrade offer. If you don’t want to upgrade, you must click the link in the middle of the window to “change the upgrade schedule or cancel your scheduled upgrade.” So it’s very easy to accidentally start the upgrade process without intending to.

Also, Microsoft has switched the Windows 10 upgrade from “Optional” to “Recommended” in Windows Updates. That means that the upgrade will install as part of Windows Updates unless you block it.  You can read more about this on Microsoft’s website.
